the public to devote its life to study of his work. “I intend each 
and every reader to lay aside his business, to abandon his 
trade, to relinquish his profession, and to concentrate wholly 
upon my work.” Joyce said the same thing, and like Rabelais, 
was free with the new medium in an especial way. For Joyce, 
throughout Finnegans Wake , television is “the Charge of the 
Light Brigade,” and the whole world is comprised in a single 
book.

     In addition Rabelais gives the reader a good tactile drubbing:
